Statement and Bio

I’m not really sure why I paint. It has had a hold on me since I was a young boy. I think it is rooted in the early awareness of ‘things out there’, of an external world, and, the dawning question or feeling - ‘what is going on?’ For me painting, and drawing, are wonderfully flexible tools for getting to the heart of this matter.

I don’t work in any one style, or on any one subject. I grew up in the countryside, so this has always drawn me to landscape subjects. In my thirties my work was mainly about people and relationships. I’ve lived in London for nearly fifty years, so the sheer intensity of living in a big city features strongly via street scenes.

My work is always based on direct experience, which doesn’t necessarily mean directly ‘from the subject’. As I said, the starting point is always ‘what is going on’. This means getting underneath any superficial appearance or ‘facts’ to discover the fundamental nature of what is going on and see into the life of things.

There are many wonderful paintings from the past and present that do this, but none that quite match the type of experience that I get, or quite answer the main question. This is good, as it means that reality is an open book, and, what is going on remains an open question. Even the physicists agree on that!

I grew up in Somerset and studied at Leeds University and the Slade School of Art during the 1970s. Since retiring from a career in NGO leadership and senior management I have been able to return to painting on a full-time basis.
